Actions, Activities, Projects from May 2011 on
Overall Objective:
COMMUNAL AND LEGAL POLICY CHANGE
CONCERNING TURTLE AND NATURE PROTECTION
Objective 1: Awareness Building and Education
Project:
Kaptan June's Hut
Timeline: up and running…
Description:
The famous beach hut is a tool as well as a project on it own, since it
is the foundation's main public relations centre. Here we reach
interested people, residents and visitors alike, can talk to them, give
them information and material and they can meet Kaptan June and our
volunteers, have a chat, go away with a souvenir and the nice feeling to
have done something good…
Needs: volunteers, print material (brochures, posters, leaflets),
tasteful sea turtle related souvenirs, communication tools for
volunteers and other interested parties
Progression: print material and communication tools are well on their
way, a group of volunteers is working in the hut, further funds are
needed…
Project: Environmental Education for Children and
Adults
Timeline: started…
Description:
Two branches are planned, one includes print material for children, like
colouring books, story books etc. and school education in the form of
little lectures in the schools; the other branch addresses adults and
stakeholder groups, like tour boat captains, fishermen, local
administrations and decision makers to provide the required knowledge
and lobby for policy changes.
Needs: volunteers (lecturers, knowledgeable personnel), print material
(brochures, posters, leaflets, presentations, booklets), further funds
are needed…
Progression: print material and communication tools are in production,
plans for meetings and lectures over winter are made…
Project: Documentary Film
Timeline: started…
Description:
An offer by a well versed documentary film to produce a piece about the
Loggerheads in Dalyan has been made. We did get the necessary
permissions, but lack the full funding for this ambitious project.
Needs: funding…
Progression: planning process
Objective 2: Pilot Projects and Demonstration Activities
Project: Propeller Guards for Tour Boats
Timeline: started…
Description:
Stainless steel propeller guards are mounted over the tour boat
propellers like cages, preventing them to further slash sea and other
turtles (like the Nile Turtles and other Freshwater Turtles in the
Dalyan River). The pilot project aims for setting a good example and
compelling data about injured turtles. We hope that our example will
bring a policy change towards an obligation to mount propeller guards.
Needs: meetings with tour boat operators and captains, willingness to
have propeller guards mounted, funds…
Progression: the first propeller guards are mounted, we hope for the
required support to fix more boats with them
Objective 3: Data Compilation
Project: Data Compilation about Sea Turtle Habitats
and Threats (direct and indirect)
Timeline: on-going…
Description:
Contemporary protection measures do not focus on the species alone as
has been done for a long time, but on the conservation of their
habitats, the catchments areas of their life cycle and if possible, the
whole eco system. Therefore we are compiling new data of the Dalyan
Basin to be compared with formerly collected data about biodiversity and
habitats.
Needs: Field research (time and material), cooperations with other
researchers, funds…
Progression: most of it is already in planning, the actual research will
be done periodically over a longer time
Objective 4: Direct and Indirect Policy Demands
Project: Advocacy and Lobbying
Description:
This part consists of the sum and results of nearly all other activities
and projects. Every little morsel, every result is used for a change in
policy for a more effective Loggerhead and habitat protection. It
involves many parties, all stakeholders and decision makers as well as
every single volunteer.
Needs: Analyses of all material, time and print material, communication
tools, media work, funds…
Progression: always and ever ongoing, from visits to the Governor of the
Muğla Province to PR actions, from project writing to media work…
